June 16th 1960: Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho was unleashed 50 years ago today. It earned $32 million which translates to nearly $370 million to today’s ticket prices. The film changed the face of filmmaking, and ushered in countless of imitators, spawned 3 sequels, a spin-off and a much-maligned remake in 1998.

Review: Alfred Hitchcock was in his late 50’s when he set out to make Psycho. This was a film that – before changing the course of filmmaking – did not want to be made by the studio. So, Hitchcock would ultimately foot the bill to the tune of $800,000 to get the film made. It was certainly a far cry from the lavish productions of previous efforts like Vertigo and North by Northwest, but that was the point. Hitchcock had the strong desire to make a cheaper, darker and edgier film then he ever had before. So, after anonymously purchasing the rights to Robert Bloch’s novel for a mere $9000, it was decided that Psycho would be just that film, and in the end, it was to become Hitchcock’s most famous and successful film.
